Building backlinks stopping me from getting into affiliate marketing

I was just checking on Tim Suolo’s course in Ahrefs academy. It’s a $799 SEO course which is offered for free for limited time.

i was always wondering whether backlinks are essential for rankings or not. Some said no, some said yes. In that course Tim said that backlinks are not essential for two main reasons :

1. competition for that keyword is really low
2. your domain authority is very high

so what it means is that if you start from scratch on a new domain you have to build backlinks. Else there’s no chance of ranking. And if you don’t rank, you can’t make money.
what do the pros over here think about this? as creating click worthy and great content needs lot of subject matter expertise, money and time, do you guys think that it’s even worthwhile for a newbie to get into affiliate marketing through SEO?
