Anybody open to spending 10 seconds to help a newcomer out?

I want to get set up with affiliate marketing, and start creating a site and content. However, I don't know which product I want to use yet, and the affiliate marketing site I went to (Cj affiliates) requires that I have a popular site, before I can view what products/services they have.

I want to go through lots of affiliate opportunities, choose a product I know I'm confident in, maybe its board games or something. Then I wanted to create my website all about that, blog, run FB ads to direct to my site etc... and use the affiliate link for the product I've made my site about.

Am I completely thinking about affiliate marketing wrong? In my head, I wouldn't create the site/blog/content until I've chosen which affiliate product/service I want to work with. But going to CJ affiliates, and Amazon affiliates, it seems the only option is to start a site first that is popular first?

Please help!
