Question about affiliate model, using Honey on Amazon as an example

Apologies in advance since I'm new to affiliate marketing and I hope this abides by the forum rules... anyway, I was using the honey extension recently on Amazon and it got me wondering: how exactly does honey make money on the Amazon platform specifically? I get that they primarily rely on affiliate links to receive a commission, but I’m assuming they’re not part of the Amazon Associates affiliate program, given the statement Amazon released about them being malware…

so if they’re just showing you different, potentially lower-cost sellers through the same Amazon platform, how exactly are they making money there? Do non-Amazon affiliate network links (e.g. Commission Junction) work for products that are sold on Amazon? I'm thinking about joining CJ or another network and just trying to understand a little bit more about how it all works. (I’ll admit I currently don’t know much about how the process works…) Thank so much in advance!
