Does Amazon pay commission only if I use a direct link to a product and the customer buys that specific product?

What happens if they buy something else?

I'm trying to figure out if it's possible to use their API to set up some kind of a product feed for my general niche. So instead of specific products, I would like to use teasers that might get people interested enough to click. But what if then they buy something different?
